This pretty Nano is about 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, a little more than 5 feet tall. Tata says the car’s got a 623 cc 2-cylinder engine, no power steering no radio and only one windshield wiper. Tata says it produces 30 to 35 horsepower. That’s less than all but the smallest motorcycles. And the New York Times, in an excellent story looking at just how Tata built a $2,500 car (answer - eliminate everything that isn’t absolutely necessary to make it accelerate, turn or stop). Awesome car!

“Tata’s been ginning up hype for the Nano for more than a year, promising that it would motorize India’s masses - hence its nickname, “The People’s Car” - and there’s been no end of rumors, leaks and speculation about it in recent months.”

These city cars will be use for the general public to solve the “last mile” problem. They come with a rechargeable linthium-ion battery and have the feature of turning 360 degrees to park sideways easier. I’m pretty sure the bums will take advantage of joy riding on this public city cars.

“The idea is to have a network of these small, electric cars stacked outside mass transit systems so commuters can grab them as needed.”

“They can either drop it off at the vehicle stack at their destination, if there happens to be one, or returned to their original stack, where the vehicle will be recharged and wait for the next person to take it.”

“Each of its parts is neatly attached to the wall, and labelled so that passersby might know exactly what is what. In fact, it’s downright educational.”
